Background
Calhoun, based
in Basingstoke, specialise in the manufacture and distribution of
healthcare textiles, cargo control and industrial textile products. Two
main areas of business
1. Manufacture
and distribution of garments and other textile products for hospital use.
Garments are made in Yorkshire from materials purchased mainly from the
USA and India. The factory in Yorkshire employs 30+ machine operators with
some assembly contracted out. Sales are 85% UK and 15% export.
2. Manufacture
and distribution of cargo control and industrial textile products, for
example, polyethylene tarpaulins and load restraint equipment such as
buckles and straps.

2 UK locations, 50+ employees, £5m turnover.
Scope of requirements
CRM including marketing database and telesales, sales order processing & invoicing, stock control, works order processing, purchasing, EDI, financial ledgers and e-services
Fast, integrated CRM and telesales environment required - providing quick response to quotation requests and follow up.
Production planning - to be kept simple and flexible via the use of spreadsheet models linked to main application software.
Euro requirements - key reason for replacing existing systems.
Latest technology required - E-business services, EDI and CAD.
Company IT standards - management required a clear strategy for future information systems selection and implementation.
The ITT was issued to six qualified suppliers. Following evaluation of supplier responses and detailed structured demonstrations from a shortlist the Company selected a packaged software solution. This solution, running on Unix and Windows NT, required no modifications and covered all aspects of the business from financials, logistics to CRM from a supplier specialising in its industry sector i.e. light manufacturing and distribution.
