Background

Willan formerly a building products supplier has been renamed Passivent and now provides simple automatic ventilation by means of non-electrical humidity-sensitive air inlets and extracts. Operations include a direct link to a third party manufacturing site.

Issues

Change in business - the company had significantly diversified its operations since the purchase of the existing computer system which was based on a combination of bespoke applications and packaged software. 

System performance - the system was slow, increasingly unreliable and becoming functionally inadequate.

Lack of appropriate in-house IT support - the Company had insufficient in-house IT support.

Upgrade versus replacement - the pros and cons of upgrading and improving existing systems versus introducing new hardware and software.

 

Summary

Enhanced the use of existing systems via an action plan to improve the poor performance and unreliability of the existing systems without the need to invest in completely new systems combined with organisational and operational improvements.
